The Changing Landscape of the SAT

The ACT and SAT: do they predict college success? This week, our SAT prep tutor Katherine writes on her opinions of the changing landscape of the SAT. In the past week, I have been forwarded articles regarding the University of Chicago’s decision to no longer require standardized test scores for admission. The accompanying messages ranged from â€Å"Have you seen this? Thoughts?!† to â€Å"What are YOU going to do?† I am an SAT prep tutor. My bookshelves are lined with every SAT prep book you can imagine, some dog-eared and filled with my own marginal notes: read the questions trickery AGAIN! I have worked with dozens of students on the SAT and more on the ACT. I’ve built a career that at least on the surface focuses on demystifying multiple choice questions for sixteen-year-olds who are sure that they’ll never see anything like this again. What’s the point? University of Chicago agrees with them. However, from my perspective as a tutor, the student’s score on the ACT/SAT —the number that colleges will see— has only ever been the short game; the long game is teaching st udents how to find patterns and manage time, skills that will put them at a huge advantage once they're in college. The ACT and SAT: do they predict college success? The SAT and ACT have not, as numerous studies have shown, been good predictors for performance in college. They are not particularly in line with the types of knowledge students are being taught in high school. Numerous studies show the effects of social and economic status on standardized test scores. As a result, many schools are seeking other methods of assessing the student as a candidate for the university. Yes, I’ve seen this. I’ve seen this coming and I am so excited for the opportunity it presents for students to represent themselves and their abilities better. I am happy that universities want to remove unfair barriers to students who belong in their halls but who struggle with tests designed to trick and confuse them, slow them down, and second-guess their critical thinking skills. I want each and every one of my students to achieve the success they’re capable of without unnecessary barriers. As for what I’m going to do about it, I am going to continue to do what I have done in the past eight years. I am going to work with students on honing their skills and confidence. You see, I have never seen the SAT score as the ultimate goal. My students have goals that involve acceptances to college, and they conflate that goal with some often-arbitrary score on a standardized test. Rather than buy into that, I have worked hard to convince my students to see the SAT as an opportunity. Refining your scheduling and study skills The SAT is an opportunity to refine their scheduling and study skills. In high school, students are rarely given such clear opportunities for self-paced and individual work. Even long projects have ample in-school time scheduled for them. In contrast to their in school work, I focus on building the expectation of autonomy and independence with my students. I teach my students to make a timeline, complete work neatly, and stay organized. SAT prep is largely a test of pattern recognition. Students who do not study often just don’t have enough data yet to pick out the patterns. When I work with a student, we call back to past questions, compiling a reservoir of examples for each pattern. Especially in math, pattern recognition builds skills and confidence. After three months of SAT prep, my students tell me they see improvement in their academic classes too. Applying pattern recognition and confidence builds my students’ trust in their own abilities. I give my students the opportunity to actually see their progress. I challenge my students to see their brain as a muscle and to value consistent and steady improvement rather than quick fixes and big jumps. Athletes and musicians do not become talented overnight, and neither do SAT students. They practice; they devote time. They learn to trust themselves and their instincts. The SAT itself is not what teaches these skills; I do. Many educators strive to provide their students with trust and confidence, and I have the privilege and responsibility to do that in an individualized environment that is managed by my student. The SAT is the work that we focus on now, but as the college process changes and more schools adopt UChicago’s decision, students will not lose the need for these intangible skills. What does the University of Chicago’s decision mean? Right now, it means students have the opportunity to submit application materials to a school without standardized test scores. However, many schools still require those tests, and it is likely that most high school student will still need to take a test for at least some of their applications. UChicago’s decision also signals that there is there is exciting change on the horizon. I, for one, am excited about the next frontier. My love for teaching has certainly never been conflated with a love of the SAT. I do have a profound respect for the test’s usefulness in teaching a set of skills to sixteen-year-olds. But ultimately the SAT isn’t intended to measure confidence, trust, commitment, or independence, and those are the skills I believe my students most need. -- Katherine graduated from Columbia in 2013 where she received her B.A. in Psychology with a special concentration in Linguistics. This book follows the true experiences of the author at 9 years old as he struggles to hide his identity, his faith and everything about his life, in order to survive. He is so resilient and has an amazing way of being filled with hope even when totally consumed by fear. What stays with me the most though, is the authors lack of self-pity through all of it. I found this book impossible to put down and yet at times, the all too vivid images which the author describes were difficult to face. This book is so different from any other that I have read on this subject and I had problems trying to pinpoint why. Perhaps it is the point of view of a child that makes it more tragic and heart-wrenching. As we learn in the book, the title comes from a polish myth that Jews could not see the sun. Research shows that this is probably the first time the CBC addressed the subject of the holocaust directly. This unique childhood memoir of the Holocaust has been praised as powerful (Cincinnati Enquirer), touching (Jewish Digest), and heartbreaking (Library Journal). A true story of rare beauty and remarkable power, it has become an enduring classic. One day, when Jacob Kuperblum was eight, he came home to his town in Poland. His family and friends were gone, rounded up by the Germans only hours earlier. He would never see them again. Thus begins a journey of survival as a young boy travels from town to town in a desperate search for safety and shelter, growing up in fear, deprived of his home and his people and even his identity. One is that there seem nowadays to be so many more urgent calls on public money. Isn't public funding for the arts an unaffordable luxury? The second worry is that there seem to be so many other things that are similar to the arts, but that do not attract similar public funding. Are the arts being picked out for special privileges, perhaps thanks to snobbery? I will try to show why, in spite of these worries, the arts remain a deserving case for some public funding. Let's begin with the claim that the arts are attracting special treatment. A comparison can be made with sports. Like the arts, sports call for skill and discipline from their participants. Like the arts, sports can be enjoyed by spectators as well as participants. Like the arts, sports vary a lot among themselves. Like the arts, sports are publicly funded to some extent. The main difference seems to be, however, that while public funding of sports is usually restricted to support for participants (e.g training of sportspeople), public funding of the arts often extends to spectators as well as participants. One can go to an art gallery or museum for free, but one pays to go to Anfield or Brands Hatch. Is this fair? The answer is that the contrast is exaggerated. On the one hand, spectatorship of sports is sometimes publicly funded. One can watch Wimbledon on the BBC for free, just as one can go to an art gallery for free. On the other hand, not all spectatorship of the arts is publicly funded. It costs money to go to a premier league football match, but it costs no less to see a stadium rock concert. One must be careful to compare like with like. One should compare the treatment of niche arts with that of niche sports, arts infrastructure with sports infrastructure, etc. One should also be careful not to assume a purist's definition of the arts, according to which a stadium rock concert doesn't count as an arts event. That would be like claiming that football is not a sport, but only a game (sports being limited to pursuits that involve horses and hounds!) In general we should expect public arts and sports funding to go to pursuits that are worth preserving but will otherwise not be viable, because there are otherwise not enough people who will pay enough money for them, while keeping them open to others. The government should step in where the market fails. But this brings us straight to our other worry. Surely, with so many more urgent calls on government expenditure, support for such things as sports and arts, however admirable, must be a low priority? They may be worth preserving, but is their preservation more urgent than the preservation of human lives in public hospitals? The thought here is that priority should reflect urgency. But this seems a bad principle for government. It leads to the government thinking only about the short-term. Shouldn't the government provide for the future, as well as coping with the present? If so, the arts, like sports, seem suitable for inclusion in the government's longer-term plans. The government needs to ask itself whether great achievements and great excellences can be allowed to go to waste, bearing in mind that once they have gone to waste it will be much more expensive to recreate them (or to create replacements for them). This argument seems to assume that a time will come when we will miss the arts or sports we have lost. That may not be true. Few people miss Morris dancing (a nearly dead art) or jousting (a nearly dead sport). But suppose we lost all dance-related arts, or all performance arts? Suppose we lost all combat sports, or all dangerous sports? Then we will live in a world with fewer choices and fewer opportunities for human beings to excel and develop their abilities, as well as for other human beings to spectate and admire this development.
